Working with a real estate professional is going to be something that you do a few times in your life, whether you are just interested in buying homes to live in or you are an investor. It is a great idea to have a relationship with your real estate professional regardless of which camp you fit into, because you are going to be seeing a lot of this person.

There is a distinct level of professionalism needed in your relationship, but it can help to have someone that you explicitly trust as well. Are you looking to build that relationship? Keep these few things in mind:

1. Start Slowly

You want to build a relationship from the first day, but you don’t want to jump into the relationship like that person is your best friend. Instead, work up to a closer relationship by forging connections and actually talking to your real estate professional. Be honest about what you want and show your true personality. It is easy to put on some fake persona, but don’t do that. You are a team and your real estate professional needs to be able to see and understand who you really are.

2. Stay on Task

Talk to your real estate agent frequently, but stay on task when it comes to your search for a home. Your real estate professional has certain jobs, but he or she doesn’t do everything. For example, you can’t expect your real estate agent to be able to oversee contractor’s work, for instance. There is a line that you really don’t want to cross if you don’t have to.

Of course, you can ask for professional suggestions on contractors, painters, installation teams, etc. Just make sure that what you ask of your real estate professional is something that actually falls into his or her job description.

3. Communicate Openly

Whatever methods of communication your real estate professional has available, take advantage of it. Use email, texting, calling, smoke signals, or even Facebook messenger if you have to, just make sure that there is an open line of communication. You will be able to get notice of everything much more quickly, which can help when you are trying to close in on a house that you really like or you have buyers that are moving quickly.

These are just three things you can do for working with a real estate professional, but they are absolutely key to building up that relationship that you dream of having with them. It doesn’t take that much work on your part, but it helps to push everyone to the next level.
